Several years ago, we returned to our home, after a ten day vacation to see my mom and sister, and to camp out in the mountains by a lake in Northern California, with some old friends.  When I walked in our front door, I flipped the switch to turn on the light, but nothing happened.  So, I went to a lamp, but something was in the way and I stumbled.  When I got to the lamp, and turned it on, nothing happened.  We were still in the dark.  Upon further examination, with the aid of a flashlight, we discovered that the light bulbs had not burned out, they had been taken.  In fact, there was not a single, solitary light bulb in the entire house, except for the one in the refrigerator.  A lot of other things were taken too, but the theft of the light bulbs baffled us.

I just love it when I am reading along in the Bible, then all of a sudden, there comes a flash of understanding, a truth stares me right in the face.  It is like I had been in a dark room, then someone came in behind me and suddenly turned on the light.

Jesus was the true light of the world, HE brought light to EVERY one that was ever born (John 1:9).  Some receive that light of truth that HE brings.  They stand in wonder at it.  Others, shut their eyes, refusing to see the truth, suppressing that which GOD whispers into his heart (Romans 1:18-20).  When he does that, he is turning away from GOD HIMSELF, rejecting the faith the LORD is offering him (Romans 10:17). This is also referred to as not receiving (refusing) the love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10).

Why would anyone do that?  Because they don’t like what they hear being said.  They want to keep doing what they are doing (John 3:19-21).  It is like a little child putting their fingers in their ears I don’t hear you.

Refusing the light of the gospel, that JESUS died for our sins, leads to death and hell.  JESUS said, If you do not believe in ME, you will die in your sins (John 8:21,24).

But we who believe in JESUS, can also, and sometimes do refuse the light that the HOLY SPIRIT gives us concerning areas where GOD wants to refine us.  Have you ever turned from the light GOD brings you?  Afraid it will demand something of you that you do not want to give?  I know there have been times that I have been afraid of GOD’s light.  It would demand change.  Let me explain.  Once, when reading in the Bible, a verse spoke strongly to me concerning stubbornness.  At that point, I rejected the idea that the word applied to me, and shifted the emphasis to another.  I said to myself, “I am not stubborn, but Mac is.  Therefore, since this verse seems to speak to me, GOD must want me to pray for Mac.”

Because, I repeatedly suppressed the truth GOD was speaking to me, it took years before the LORD got me to admit my own stubbornness, and let HIM change me.  Meanwhile, I was causing myself problem, after problem with my stubborness.

When GOD speaks, listen, and if you aren’t sure what HE means, draw closer and ask.  Acting on what you know to do, is the best way to learn to hear GOD’s voice.  GOD’s word always brings light.  That light will keep you from stumbling around in the dark, as I did trying to find a light that worked.

Looking unto JESUS, the Author and Perfecter of my faith.
