There are three projects I need to start: 1) washing windows and baseboards, 2) shampooing the carpet, and 3) painting the bathroom and kitchen. They really need done and I really need to get started.
To paint a wall, I need a paint brush, perhaps a roller, and certainly some paint; to wash the windows, I need Windex and paper towels; to wash the baseboards, I need just some soapy water and a rag; to shampoo the carpet I need carpet cleaner. No matter what I do, something is needed. But, when we got paid, Mac got the supplies I needed; so I no longer have any excuse to put off what needs to be done.
GOD equips each of HIS children for the work HE has assigned for them to do (Colossians 1:12). The literal Greek says, GOD equips us for our part in the lot of those set apart to HIMSELF.
GOD had Joshua give a portion of land to each of the Jews. Which piece of land each person received (inherited) was determined by lot. Throughout the New Testament, it is GOD who assigns to us our place (lot -also translated our inheritance among believers) to work and participate in the privileges of those set apart to GOD (an example is seen in Acts 10:32).
This inheritance and work of each Christian has been selected for them. In fact, the LORD prepared certain things ahead for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).
So what does that mean? Initially, when one believes in JESUS he is placed in the Kingdom of JESUS and became GOD’s child and is named as an heir of GOD and co heir with JESUS. Meaning that what GOD has belongs to believers. But there is another aspect of our inheritance that begins on earth, here and now. We who believe in JESUS have a job to do here on earth. We have been given the privilege to co labor with JESUS in bringing people into HIS kingdom and to encourage and build up fellow believers. Each of us has a specific place of service, and assignments. We each have been given our own territory.
We, however should not boast beyond proper limits, but should confine ourselves to the field GOD has assigned to us. (2 Corinthians 10:13 NIV), neither should we go beyond our limits (2 Corinthians 10:15 NIV). GOD’s grace equips us for our own assignment. If we go to the throne of grace, to get grace to help us do what needs to be done, we will always have precisely what we need to get the job done. GOD urges us to run to the throne of grace to get the grace (that which is needed from CHRIST’s supply) to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). You may never have thought of praying for something as actually praying for grace. But a definition of grace is the acrostic: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. GOD has given us everything we need for life here and now and for godliness (2Peter 1:3-4) but they are kept in the cupboard of heaven (Ephesians 1:3), so we must pray and ask for them to be handed to us.
But sometimes we look at the assignment GOD has given someone else and turn a little green.
I love worship music, and I would love to get to pick what songs we get to sing. I may want it, or even try to do it, but GOD only equips me for my part in the lot, not someone else’s part. Although I love worship, you sure wouldn’t want me leading the songs of praise!
Simon was a new convert who had not yet learned the ways of GOD. Now before he believed in JESUS, Simon had been a sorcerer (Acts 8:9,13) and understood power and authority. He had previously used the authority given him by demons. Therefore, when he saw Peter and John lay their hands on some to impart the Holy SPIRIT to them, his old nature of wanting to be the center of attention and have power rose up inside him. Simon offered John and Peter money, saying, “give me this authority so that I may do it also (Acts 8:19).
Peter, who had an explosive old nature reacted, “May your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of GOD may be purchased with money. You have neither part or lot in this matter” (Acts 8:20,21).
In other words, Simon’s assignment was not to lay hands on people to receive the Holy SPIRIT. Special authority had been given the Apostles (the original 11 disciples and Paul) for they alone had the unique assignment to set up the New Testament Church and guard it against error. In order to have this authority, you had to be specifically chosen by GOD and be personally taught by the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Had Simon taken time to learn the ways of GOD, he would have understood that this authority being exercised by Peter and John, was not his privilege. We too must learn what GOD wants of us. If we stay in the Word of GOD and respond to the nudgings of the Holy SPIRIT (inner knowing) we know what GOD wants of us- step by step (Philippians 2:13, Deuteronomy 30:11-14).
As I read GOD’s word, GOD spoke to me through it and showed me my calling many years ago. My calling is to share with others what HE shows me in HIS word. But each day, as I commit my day and work to HIM, HE leads me in assignments- where I am to go and what I am to say. I know when I am to share something with you. As you look to HIM, you also will know your part in the lot, (your assignment to co labor with GOD here and now).
Just as Mac got all the supplies I need for my three jobs, so GOD will equip you with all you need to do what HE tells you to do. You have authority in your sphere of influence and have been equipped to complete your own assignment, but not another’s.
What is GOD asking you to do today?
Looking unto JESUS, the Author and Perfector of my faith.
